Home Learning

Home learning (independent learning) is a vital skill. It provides experience of working independently, where students plan their own time and are self-reliant. It also equips them for exam preparation, further and higher education and the world of work.

The key principles of homework at The Swanage School are:

  • Consolidation and assessment of learning - proven to have a significant impact in helping students to know more and remember more.
  • Flipped learning - tasks completed before a lesson are effective in helping students take responsibility for their own learning and increase involvement and confident in lessons
  • Interleaving and fluency - returning to previously taught material to ensure key knowledge and skills are embedded.

The structure of homework at The Swanage School

For core subjects - English, Maths and Science - we have a 20-20-20 approach, where students are asked to spend 20 minutes on reading, 20 minutes on maths and 20 minutes on science, three times a week (alternatively, a 15-15-15 approach, spending 15 minutes a day on each subject, four days a week).

Core subjects are set on Sparx software, with a week to complete.

In addition, in Year 7 and 8, students may occasionally receive French and PBL homework. In Year 9, homework will also include humanities subjects.

In Year 10 and 11, students are expected to spend more time on homework and we recommend between 60-100 minutes a night. This includes the core subjects set on Sparx, homework set by teachers for option subjects, revision, past papers and practise of exam techniques.
